Pioneering for the Future: A Benelux Trade Mission to the USA

As was made evident by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Liesje Schreinemacher, there is an emphasis on the European Union as a home market to trade with. However, there is also a need to seek and enhance global collaboration from both the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders region), particularly with the United States of America. This was made even clearer when both EU countries decided to partner up and organize a trade mission to the USA in the fall of 2023.

After a very successful trade mission to Germany, accompanied by King Willem-Alexander, focused on green hydrogen for North Rhine-Westphalia. This trade mission to the USA highlights the potential for strong international cooperation between The Benelux and the US. However, the promising development requires a keen eye on potential challenges and a proactive approach to doing business.

California and Arizona: beaming states for economic development

The USA plays a leading role in the global economic landscape. As of 2023, the USA accounted for an impressive 43.36% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
California, the third-largest and most populous state in the USA, is a significant economic player not only within the country but also on a global scale, with a GDP of 3.14 trillion US dollars in 2021.

The strategic importance of California in international trade is supported by market studies, emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive preparation for the US market. Interestingly, California’s land area is approximately 0.04 times that of Europe, highlighting its unique territorial dimensions and outstanding position.

Next to California, Arizona is another strong state for international trade. Known for the Gran Canyon and the dessert, the state is an attractive hub for the semiconductor industry. It is a growing sector that is advancing as we speak, with the help of international cooperation such as the trade mission that has visited.

Dos and Don’ts of Trade Missions: Factors for Success and Challenges to Avoid

A successful trade mission requires not only thorough preparation but also clear guidelines for effective action in various situations. The following table presents recommendations on what should be undertaken during a trade mission and what should be avoided.

A lasting reputation: The strength of relationships between The Netherlands, Belgium, and the USA

The close bonds shared among The Netherlands, Belgium, and the USA underscore the recognized economic prowess of all 3 nations. Particularly noteworthy is the acclaim The Netherlands receives in the realms of trade and technology, boasting the presence of numerous globally renowned companies headquartered there. Concurrently, Belgium is viewed in the USA as stable and developed, with its membership in the European Union and strong trade ties with the United States playing a pivotal role.

The importance of this alliance is duly recognized by notable global politician:

Barack Obama (Former President of the United States):

“Closest friends whose friendship will never die.”

“Without the Netherlands, there wouldn’t be a United States of America as everyone knows it now.”

Angela Merkel (Former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany):

“Belgium and the Netherlands set an example for cross-border cooperation in Europe.”

Ban Ki-moon (Former UN Secretary-General):

“Netherlands and Belgium, pillars of unity in international collaborations.”
