The Grain Belt in the Midwestern States is probably the first thing people think of when it is  about agriculture and the Food sector in the US. In only 4 Midwestern states, 90 million acres of corn are produced each year. But producing the primary products on farms is mostly only the first step in producing the  actual food. Food manufacturing includes various subordinated sectors, as the corn grown in the grain belt has to be processed to flour by grain mills, and eventually bakeries  produce the daily bread of US- citizens. Naturally,  many more industries are included such as oils and fats, baby foods, meat- and fish processing to name a few of them.

Overall, there are about 30 industries included in the sector. With over 3700 manufacturing establishments in 2020, California houses by far the most in the US and is therefore of high interest when considering entering this highly promising market. In fact, solely California generates a nominal GDP of over 3 billion US$, which equals three quarters of Germany’s GDP. This provides a lot of business opportunities that we shall investigate further. Yet, there is one significant factor that can either hinder or help businesses to grasp these possibilities: political framework.
